EFFECTS OF CHROMOLAENA ODORATA ALLELOCHEMICALS ON CARBOHYDRATE DYNAMICS IN COASTAL VEGETATION.

Allelochemical substances significantly influence the growth and survival of plants
through positive and negative allelopathy, affecting nutrient competition and production.
Allelochemicals are secondary metabolites not essential for the mother organism's growth, with
negative effects crucial for defense against herbivores. The paper discusses the invasive weed
Chromolaena odorata, highlighting its allelopathic properties and toxic effects on crops and
livestock. Research focuses on the effects of its leaf extract and leachate on the biochemical
parameters of coastal plants like Sonneratia alba and Salvadora persica, exploring carbohydrate
metabolism related to reducing sugars, total sugars, starch, and overall carbohydrate content.
Findings show that the leaf extract enhances carbohydrate contents, while the leachate
negatively impacts growth, indicating potential for herbicide development from allelochemical
characteristics of C. odorata. Leaf leachate of Chromolena odorata adversely effects on
photosynthesis subsequently overall metabolism of influenced plants.
